Domestic violence, substance misuse and families project

In partnership with the Stella Project and the University of Bedfordshire, Adfam ran a project which explored the experiences of adult family members and young people affected by domestic violence and substance use. The project also addressed the lack of relevant information and resources available on this topic. It covered:

1 Research

The report Supporting families affected by substance use and domestic violence by Dr Sarah Galvani looks at attitudes and understanding of domestic violence and drugs and alcohol. The research was conducted with the coordinators of local family support groups and also young people affected by parental substance misuse. The report identifies what people feel is needed to support families successfully around the issue of domestic violence.

2 Resources

In October 2010, information for family support groups on the issue of domestic violence was collected and distributed.

In February 2011 a launch event was held for the Thinking it Through DVD and accompanying resource pack for use by those working with children and young people affected by substance use and domestic violence. This were produced in partnership with groups of young people and features five fictional films based on the real life stories of the young people which cover a range of messages on relationships and advice on keeping safe.

3 Family abuse project

The next stage of this project will look at domestic violence perpetrated by adult children against their parents and how best to support the parents affected by it. If you would like further information on the project or would like to get involved, please email Oliver Standing.
