help me

Posted by poppybabe on 18 January 2015.

I live with an alcoholic and ex drug addict. He was often violent when he couldn't get drugs and my life has often been hell. He is now a dying alcoholic with liver failure and copd to add to his problems. I still love him and am his carer but am findind it very hard to cope with the emotional turmoil of it all. I don't really know where to turn to or who to ask for help from as I have lived with the secrecy of his life for so long. Doctors are really good with him but I am really struggling. I am constantly being told he hasn't long to live but this has been going on for years. I can't give up on him but I don't know how much longer I can take the strain of it all. I have tried helplines but they just refer me to others. Any help would be appreciated

You sound amazing that you have been able to be so strong and care for your husband in very difficult circumstances. This must be so hard for you and I feel sorry that you haven't been able to find the right support for yourself.
I work for a charity called The Icarus Trust that specifically supports the families and friends of addicts. We could offer you the support of one of our 'family Friends'. These are trained volunteers who you would be able to talk with. They have a lot of experience of what you are dealing with and so hopefully, you might find contact with them helpful. It is a free service and they could also signpost you to other help that is available.
You can contact us on or visit the website
I really hope that you will be able to find the support for yourself that you so deserve. Good luck with everything.
