Umbrella organisation

Helping families - and anyone who comes into contact with them

hide this page

In 2009 Adfam received funding from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation to develop into an umbrella organisation - meaning that Adfam was given extra resources to provide advice and practical guidance to other groups and individuals working in the sector. By helping the family support sector as a whole to grow and develop, Adfam is able to help more families affected by drug and alcohol use than ever before and reach out to a wider audience of professionals working in this growing field.

In Adfam’s experience, some support groups can feel just as isolated as the families they aim to support - that people are not listening to them and they are insufficiently supported. With the growing recognition of families’ needs, some local professionals - for example those working in drug treatment - have been expected to provide more support for families, but without the support to fulfil this role. Adfam aims to help anyone working with families to provide effective support.

Adfam’s services include:

  • Policy briefings to help keep the sector up-to-date on latest news, parliamentary developments, consultations, reports and announcements. Each briefing also includes a factsheet on a piece of key policy relevant to familie
  • Training both for family members and professionals on a comprehensive range of issues
  • Publications for different family members and people working with them, from key messages of support for families to good practice guidance and publicity resources for local groups
  • Consultancy around setting up a group and providing the best possible services for families
  • Regional forums for professionals working with families - email us for further information on how you can get involved with our regional work.
