Drugs and mental illness.
Posted by Frustrated Dad on 12 November 2017.
My son is biologically an adult. He lives at home with his mother. He uses pot, cocaine and alcohol. He takes medication for schizophrenia. He apparently goes off his meds when things are seemingly ok. I have cut him out of my life as long as he is using. His mother refuses to kick him out, I guess because of his mental disorder, she is afraid for him. And I think afraid OF him. I am a long time member of AA and I have learned that enabling is not a good solution. If she kicked him out something bad might happen but more likely he will get arrested which would keep him physically safe. The police would soon discover his mental issues and he would be referred to a mental health facility where he would most likely receive the help he so desperately needs. His mother apparently will not take the leap, so to speak. She has been living in this nightmare for over 10 years and is seemingly still in denial and/or fear. I know this is not helping my son or his mother. I have no idea what to do next. Suggestions are welcome.
