This term refers to a group of drugs otherwise known as tranquilizers – for example Valium or Diazepam – and are often used by heroin users due to their relaxing qualities and because they help ease the symptoms of withdrawal.

Tablets and capsules in various colours and sizes
What are their legal status?
They are legal as prescription drugs, but there is a significant illicit market for them too.
How much do they cost?
They can be illegally supplied from 40-50p each.
What equipment do people use to take them?
None. They are tablets or capsules.
What about dependence/addiction?
People can become addicted to benzodiazepines. Withdrawal symptoms can appear after 2-3 days of not taking them and include insomnia, irritability, nausea and tremors.
