Mephedrone

MephedroneMephedrone

Mephedrone has only recently come to prominence because of media attention, but many parents and families are concerned about it. It is a stimulant with similar effects to ecstasy or cocaine in that it makes people feel energetic and confident.

What else is it called?

Meow, m-cat, drone, bubble

What does it look like?

A white powder.

What is its legal status?

Class B. It is a cathinone and other related compounds are also banned.

How much does it cost?

When mephedrone was legal, it cost around £10 per gram. Now it is illegal, it is likely much more expensive to get hold of on the black market.

What equipment do people use to take it?

Not usually any. It can be snorted using banknotes/rolled up paper, or ‘bombed’ by rolling it up in cigarette papers and swallowing it.

What about dependence/addiction?

Little is known at this stage, despite some sensationalist media reporting. It is likely that its low cost and easy availability allowed people to use large amounts frequently, but we do not know how this will change now it is controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
