Family
Work with families, carers and individuals during times of crisis (pdf)
The three main aims of CRAFT are - to reduce the substance misuse, to get a loved one in to treatment and to improve the life of the Concerned Significant Other. The training runs as a skills workshop where practitioners get a chance to learn the philosophy of the approach but also to practice the elements of the programme that they will 'coach' their family members in to help them deal with a crisis. Specifically, elements such as teaching positive communication, domestic violence precautions, functional analysis are helpful in a crisis.
Provide services to those affected by someone else’s substance misuse (pdf)
CRAFT is a therapeutic intervention for Concerned Significant Others supporting someone with a substance misuse problem. It is a behavioural approach but it also uses motivational techniques. The programme has proven to help CSOs cope better with their loved one, help get them in to treatment but most significantly it helps them feel better, improving confidence, self esteem and feelings of anxiety and depression. It can be delivered one-to-one or in groups, where a loved one is resistant to getting help or indeed where a loved one is already getting help.
On the training, the background, research and philosophy is taught and then each element of the programme is introduced, and then learned in a workshop style - via role plays, group work, whole group discussion and using some film. The key elements are - Functional Analysis, Positive Communication, Domestic Violence Precautions, Positive Reinforcement, Inviting a Loved One in to Treatment and Looking after Yourself. At the end of the training delegates should feel able to go and start using CRAFT immediately.
Substance use
Raise awareness about substances, their use, and effects (pdf)
The CRAFT Programme helps families explore substance use and it's function, looking in detail at triggers and consequences of using substances and examining these using a systemic approach. This approach helps concerned others create meaningful strategies to recognise, deal with influence substance use and its affects.
